
Building Capability
Founded in May 1978, Tianjin FAW Product Development Center, formerly Tianjin Car Research Institute, has a history of 29 years, was approved to be a national-level corporate technical center in 2001 and ranked 5th in the auto industry according to the results of the evaluation by the National Development and Reform Commission in 2005.
This center is both a national-level corporate technical center and FAW’s base for the R&D of independent brand economical cars, where a post-doctoral research center was established.
This center keeps to the road of independent R&D of “introduction, digestion, assimilation and innovation”, adheres to supporting Tianjin FAW’s continuous development through independent innovation, follows the principle of marching forward steadily and gaining momentum for outburst, is guided by the development concept of “designing products, making process and training talents” and presses deep ahead with the work of independent R&D step by step.

Designing products
In its independent R&D, this center went through the process from partial modification to full modification, from appearance to trim and from exploration to maturity and confidence.
It shows that the 27-year development experience, use of FAW’s technologies and concept and reference of Toyota’s technologies are of great importance to the center’s road of independent R&D.
It shows that the evaluation that this center’s capacity for R&D, system assurance and test are nationally advanced is well-grounded.
It shows that this center can be successful if it makes unremitting efforts with the development concept of “designing products, making process and training talents”
Producing process
The development characteristics of economical cars decides that economical cars are difficult to develop, due to use of less frontline science and technology, how to balance the capacity for comprehensive R&D and other capacities is very important.
innovation capability and accumulation of experience, development capacity and test capacity, and level of scientific research management and level of process management shall be balanced for optimal performance.
This center strives for balanced development in strengthening the construction of core capacity. Besides, it brings out the best in itself and cultivates its core competitiveness-its remarkable distinctiveness is exactly the establishment and enhancement of the process management system.
Training talents
This center has achieved encouraging results in talent training by having produced a group of courageous and talented designers and R&D groups.
In order to ensure the successfully realization of the R&D vision, this center has been attaching great importance to the construction and training of the internal talents and the absorption and use of external talents.
During R&D practices, this center takes the strategy of synchronous R&D.
In the development and use of human resources, this center follows two basic principles: the internal principle of “training talents through good system and making them grow in practices”; and the external principle of “using talents wherever they are from”.
